ASEAN – The third-largest Ecommerce Market in World

Among the top e-commerce markets are China, the U.S., the U.K., Japan and South Korea. Southeast Asia is expected to surpass most of these markets, becoming the third-largest in the world.

In the recent time, Southeast Asia appeared to have become an ecommerce investment destination of choice as  eBay is setting up office in Indonesia, as well as Japan`s SoftBank, Sequoia Capital and SB Pan-Asia Fund investing USD 100 million in Tokopedia.

South East Asia’s Internet economy will grow six fold to about $200 billion in the next decade, according to joint research by Google Inc. and Temasek Holdings Pte.

Consumers outside of tier-one cities in Southeast Asian have ignored PCs and accessing digital platforms primarily through mobile phones which is over 55% of the total population accessing digital platforms. Indonesia, the biggest economy in South East Asia, is projected to add Net users faster than any other country in the world, according to the report.

The greater ecommerce growth in Southeast Asia is itself a challenge due to the highly fragmented nature of the region, with region-specific cultures, infrastructures, customer preferences, and regulations.
